The best habit tracker ideas are small, clear things you want more of and can count: glasses of water, pages read, a short walk, your skincare, a clear sink at night. If you can tick it off in one go, it is a good habit to track.
Below are ideas for seven parts of life, how to count each kind, and a starter set if you do not know where to begin. Pick 3 to 5, not all of them.
How to choose what to track
A habit is worth tracking when it is something you do (not a result), it fits into one day, and you would like to do it more often. “Read 10 pages” works; “be smarter” does not. “Walk 20 minutes” works; “get fit” does not.
Then choose how to count it:
| Kind of habit | Track it as | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Done or not done | One tick | Make your bed |
| A few times a day | A count | 4 glasses of water |
| How much you did | An amount | 20 pages, 30 minutes |
| A few times a week | A tick on the days you do it | Yoga 3 times a week |
| Every few days | A tick when it is due | Water the plants every 3 days |

A starter set if you are new to this
Not sure where to begin? This set takes a few minutes a day, and each habit is easy to tick off. For one picked just for you, try the which habit should I start quiz.

|---|---|---|
| Drink a glass of water | 3 times a day | Anytime |

Keep these for a few weeks before adding more. How to use a habit tracker has more on setting one up so it lasts.
Make your tracker easy to keep
A habit tracker only helps if you look at it. Fill it in at the same moment every day, like right after dinner or just before bed, so checking it becomes a small habit of its own.
Keep the list short. Ten habits look good on the first day and heavy by the tenth. If a habit stays empty for two weeks, it is not a failure: it is a sign to make it smaller, move it to another time, or let it go for now.
And leave room for real life. An empty box on a busy day is fine. What you are looking for is the pattern over a month, not a perfect row.
Paper tracker or app
Both work. A paper tracker on the fridge is hard to ignore, and coloring in a box with a pen feels good. Our printable habit trackers include a monthly habit tracker with room for any of the ideas above.
An app helps when you want reminders and a streak that counts itself. In Cozy, each idea becomes a card with one of 290 hand-drawn stickers and a soft color, and the card fills as you tick it off. You can tick a habit once, count it a few times a day, or track an amount like pages or minutes. Set it for every day, certain days or a few times a week, and skip a busy day without losing your streak.
